KESC Says Loadshedding to Rise by 7.5 Hours
Decreased power generation by the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) owing to lesser gas supply from the SSGC has increased the amount of load shedding for the Karachiites for the past two days.
People from different areas have complained about the loadshedding in their localities, which ranges from 6 to 7.5 hours a day, when the company was only resorting to shutdowns of maximum three hours a day till a couple of days back.
The KESC authorities have expressed concern over the curtailed gas supply by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), saying it negatively impacted the company’s power generation capabilities.
Admitting the power utility was exercising increased load shedding, the KESC management said it was trying to limit the duration of shut down between 3 to 6 hours. It, however, claimed the industries in the city were exempted and demanded immediate restoration of adequate gas supply to continue uninterrupted service to the citizens.
The KESC spokesman demanded the authorities to provide an additional 130 MMCFD gas for 560 MW Combined Cycle Power plant to meet the gap between the demand and the supply.
However, the citizens enduring the increased load shedding, refused to accept the company’s explanation, saying the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) units had failed to cope with the increased power break down.
“Electricity remained suspended for at least eight hours yesterday (Thursday) in our locality, causing us immense inconvenience. We had no water and our routine activities badly suffered,” Mansoor Ahmed, a resident of Defence View Korangi, said.
The concerned citizen expressed concern over the utility’s service in the upcoming summer. Similar complaints were received from Model Colony Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Liaquatabad and other parts of the city.
A KESC spokesperson, while talking to media, insisted the rise in power break down was due to shortened gas supply.
“One of our units capable of producing 560 MW, completed with the investment of 450 million US dollars, is lying functionless due to lack of gas supply. We can meet the growing demand provided we get the required gas to run our gas turbines,” he claimed.
