Karachi, OCT 30: President Asif Zardari on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the discovery of polio cases in Sindh and directed the provincial government to control the spread of the crippling disease. At a meeting convened to discuss polio in the province, Zardari was informed that four polio cases were discovered in the province this year, while some districts of Karachi and the rest of Sindh could not be covered during the immunisation campaign. The president said it was imperative to vaccinate those people that were coming to Karachi and rural Sindh from other provinces. A former army man was shot dead and two others, including a police constable of the special branch, were wounded in Frontier Colony within the remit of the Pirabad police station on Thursday morning, police said. The incident took place when the three men going on two motorcycles reached Rabbani Mohalla in Frontier Colony, Qasba Colony, where unidentified men ambushed them, the police added. Saiful Mulk, 40, died on the spot, while Ismail and Abdul Ghani were wounded, they said. After the incident the attackers managed to flee. At least 250 students were unable to appear for their matriculation exams when unknown gunmen open fired on an exam centre in Malir early on Wednesday morning. The firing had continued unabated for almost 20 minutes, and had put the lives of the students under threat. Roshan Ali Sheikh, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Karachi, has ordered Deputy Commissioner Malir to conduct an inquiry into the incident. “Apart from Malir, incidents of firing were also reported in Bin Qasim, Lyari and Mauripur,” he said, while adding that all sensitive areas will be guarded by security personnel for the protection of students. A scrap dealer was shot dead at his shop in a Bin Qasim area within the remit of the Shah Latif police station Thursday, police said. Moraiz Khan Mehsud, 32, was at his shop, situated in Street 14 of Zafar Town, where unidentified armedmen pulled up and shot him dead. They escaped following the incident, the officials said. The body was later shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities following which it was handed over to the victim`s heirs.
