 After giving a 72-hour deadline to the criminal elements in Lyari, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday that the operation in Lyari has been ended. Speaking to media Malik said, “We cannot hold the entire area hostage because of mere four-five people. The police and Rangers have only surrounded the area, while the forces have been pulled out from Lyari.” The interior minister said that maximum electricity will be restored by evening, while telephone lines were restored around 6am in the morning. The police booked leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the outlawed Peoples Amn Committee (PAC), a police inspector, two brothers of Baba Ladla and six other gangsters for killing a Kutchi Rabita Committee (KRC) leader on Sunday night. Reopening of Old Passport Office in West Zone

Federal Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik has issued orders,to the concerns department to reopen Old Passport Office in West Zone with immediate effects. South Zone will establish office in West Zone which will commence issuance of passports on war-footing basis. Earlier, at least five passport offices were operating in all five zones in Karachi but in 1999, an office located in North Nazimabad in West Zone, was shut down because the rent of the building was not being paid properly. After start of computerized passport in 2004, only Saddar and Awami Markaz offices have been issuing passports since then.

Government takes Serious Measures to Ensures bank Securities

In the wake of rampant bank dacoity incidents in Karachi, the government has taken a step, setting up a committee to oversee and ensure banks’ security. Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday held a meeting with heads of different banks and announced the decision later while talking to media persons. He said the security committee would prepare its recommendations within three weeks. He confirmed some media reports that members of some banned outfits have also been found involved in Karachi’s recent bank robberies.
