Karachi University: SC approached to look into corruption, illegal appointments

The administration of the University of Karachi is being accused of mismanagement and corruption in appointments. A human rights activist, Muhammad Zahid Maqsood, approached the Supreme Court Karachi registry on Saturday asking it to take notice of illegal practices and order an inquiry into the affairs of the university. The chancellor and vice chancellor of the university, the chairman of the higher education commission and secretary of the provincial education department have been cited as respondents. The petitioner said massive irregularities were being committed in the university and the varsity’s management had made 700 appointments despite a ban by the federal government. KU and FCCU Sign Academic Pact

The Karachi University’s International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Forman Christian College University (FCCU) in Lahore for academic and scientific cooperation between the institutions. ICCBS Director Prof. Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry and FCCU Rector Dr James A Tebbe signed the agreement at a ceremony held in Lahore. The Karachi University is recognised as a premier establishment of higher learning and research in the subcontinent, said Chaudhry. NED University: Four Names Sent to Governor for VC Post


The search committee tasked with finding the next vice chancellor (VC) of NED University of Engineering and Technology forwarded names of four applicants to Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan on Monday. After interviewing eight candidates on Sunday, the search committee settled on Prof. Dr Muzaffar Mahmood, pro-vice chancellor at NED University, Dr Muhammad Afzal Haque, director at NFC Institute of Engineering and Technology in Multan, Prof. Dr Nazimuddin Qureshi, NED Academy director-general, and Dr Mujeebuddin Memon, a professor at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. KU Invites Applications for Scholarships


Applications for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarships can be submitted up to Dec 1, an official of Karachi University announced on Thursday. According to a university statement, Karachi University EMEA Pakistan coordination team organised a seminar on how to submit an online application form for the EMEA scholarship in order to help students and staff avail the Erasmus Mundus Europe Asia (EMEA) fully-funded scholarship to Europe. Kidnapped KU student Freed in Karachi Police Raid


Police said that they safely recovered an abducted student from Gulistan-e-Johar here on Sunday.  Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCL) and Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) conducted a joint operation in Pehlwan Goth area of Gulistan-e-Johar and recovered Fahad, a student of Karachi University. One kidnapper was killed and his four accomplices managed to escape from the scene. The police said that accused had demanded Rs2 million in ransom to release the student. In another raid, Ferozabad Police apprehended an accused wanted in cases of attempted murders, extortion and kidnapping.

AKU Convocation: 25th Batch of Students Step into the Real World

The University of Karachi spends 1.5 per cent of its budget on books. No work has been undertaken over the past years to renovate the dilapidated buildings of departments of science and social sciences while research has become an uphill task as there has been no increase in allocation for running laboratories. But, at the same time, the KU expenditures have increased 41 per cent in two years. Subsequently, the deficit has increased from Rs41 million to Rs599 million in two years and it will increase to Rs998 million if the prevailing financial crisis continues by next year. Dow University will get its DNA Testing Laboratory

The Sindh department of human rights in collaboration with a Turkish group comprising forensic experts will establish a DNA testing laboratory at the Ojha campus of the Dow University of Health Sciences, said Nadia Gabool, the coordinator for the  department. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, she said the DUHS would be involved in the project. She said the Turkish group had committed to providing financial assistance for the lab. Professionals from DUHS and other institutions of repute would also be trained by Turkish forensic experts, she added. APP
